 | 2011 Flu Shots Submitted by Toni Gibson on September 27, 2011
I advise everyone to get a flu shot as it becomes available to you. There will not be a Kent Co. Health Fair this year, so I have tentatively scheduled another immunization clinic for Nov. 15th. However, I have been informed that with recent budget cuts the DSHS may not get an adequate amount of flu vaccine. They currently have the Flu Mist, which is recommended for healthy people 2 through 17 yrs of age. It is a live, attenuated (weakened) influenza virus. It is sprayed into the nostrils. You should not take the Flu Mist if you have asthma or any other form of lung disease, heart disease, kidney or liver disease, bolic disease, such as diabetes, anemia, and other blood disorders. Anyone with certain muscle or nerve disorders (such as seizure disorders or cerebral palsy) that can lead to breathing or swallowing problems should not take Flu Mist. Anyone with a weakened immune system, or anyone in close contact with someone whose immune system is so weak they require care in a protected environmnet, should not receive Flu Mist. Children or adolescents on long-term aspirin treatment should not receive Flu Mist either.
I have been told that the Spur Clinic has the flu vaccine, and the fee is $5 each. I have also been told that the Rotan Clinic may have flu shots available starting the second week of October, and the fee will be $15. I recommend calling your primary care doctor first, if that is not an option, always call ahead of time before traveling out of town to make sure you do not need an appt and that they still have an adequate supply.
